Steps to check if your modem
does not dial
Dial up users often face a common problem where their modem does
not dial and they get no connection error message. Here, we give
some steps to troubleshoot
this situation:
1. Make sure that windows is still set to auto dial. If you are
using windows operation system then you can check if in your internet
connection settings are proper. You can go to control panel and
check in Internet or Internet Options icon. Click on the Connection
tab on the top of the window. Make sure that then option called
"Always Dial My Default Connection" is selected. This
option should be marked, if it is not then it's most likely the
problem you are having.
2. If your modem gives you the "No Dial Tone" Error
then first make sure that you phone line is plugged into the modem
and that it is plugged into the correct phone jack. There are
usually two phone jack slots on the back of a modem very close
to each other and it can be easy to miss and plug it into the
wrong one. The jack that you must plug it into will be marked
Line and not phone. Once this is confirmed make sure that the
other end is plugged into the correct phone jack on the wall and
your line is still plugged in on both the back of the modem and
in the phone jack on the wall. Sometimes the wire can get loose
enough to result in disconnection. Try unplugging and then reinserting
the phone cords on all connections.
3. If you have any other devices between your modem and wall
jack like caller ID boxes, faxes or surge suppressors; then remove
them temporarily and run the phone line directly from the modem
to the wall jack.
4. If you have a handset telephone then you can plug the handset
into the back of the modem in the socket marked Phone. After that
you can then pick up the phone and check by hearing if there is
a dial tone. If there is a dial tone then check if the modem is
plugged in correctly.
5. If you still did not get a dial tone, unplug your modem wire
from the wall jack and plug a normal telephone into it. If you
hear a dial tone, you should replace the cord that is going between
your modem and the wall jack and then try to connect again.
If you still do not get the connection then there is possibility
of the modem has gone faulty due to natural causes. Modems often
give the "No Dial Tone" error when they have been hit
by lightning. If you have had a lightning storm in the area recently
and your modem was working before the storm this is most likely
the cause. This happens when a lightning strike hits the part
of the modem responsible for picking up the line so the modem
can dial out. Here, you can conclude that your modem has died
of natural causes and get a new one.
